Visa & SDF

Your Investment in a Greener Future

At BodhiTrail Journeys, we believe that travel should be a force for good. Bhutan is the world’s first carbon-negative country, and your visit plays a direct role in keeping it that way.

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

As of 2026, the Royal Government of Bhutan maintains an SDF of $100 per person, per night for international guests. This fee is the cornerstone of our “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy, ensuring that our kingdom remains pristine, exclusive, and culturally intact.

Where Does Your $100 Go?

Your contribution is deposited into a National Consolidated Fund and is transparently reinvested into four key pillars:

    • Carbon Neutrality & Conservation: Funding the maintenance of Bhutan’s 70% forest cover, which sequesters over 9 million tons of $CO_2$ annually—triple what the nation emits.
    • Free Healthcare & Education: Providing every Bhutanese citizen with access to modern medical care and education, a core tenet of our Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy.
    • Infrastructure & Innovation: Upgrading mountain trails, restoring ancient Dzongs (fortresses), and expanding our Electric Vehicle (EV) network to reduce fossil fuel reliance.
    • Youth Skilling: Funding vocational training and digital literacy programs to empower the next generation of Bhutanese “Cultural Guardians.”
Visa Logistics Made Simple

We handle the entire application process for you. To secure your visa, we require

    • A Digital Passport Copy (must be valid for at least 6 months).
    • A Recent Passport-Sized Photo.
    • Full Payment of the SDF & Visa Fee ($40): This must be settled via wire transfer to the Bhutan National Bank to trigger the visa approval.

Note for 2026 Travelers: A 5% GST now applies to local services (hotels, transport, and guides). However, the SDF remains tax-exempt, ensuring your direct contribution to our environment is maximized.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?

The SDF is a daily levy paid by all international guests to support Bhutan’s unique “High Value, Low Volume” tourism model. It is not a fee for your tour services; rather, it is a direct investment in Bhutan’s people, environment, and future.

As part of a special incentive valid until August 31, 2027, the SDF is:

  • Adults (12+): $100 per person, per night.
  • Children (6–11): $50 per person, per night (50% discount).
  • Children (Under 6): Exempt (Free).
  • Indian Nationals: 1,200 Ngultrum (approx. $15) per person, per night.

No. The $100 SDF is a government royalty. Your tour costs—including 3- to 5-star accommodations, a private vehicle, a licensed guide, and all meals—are separate. In 2026, these services are also subject to a 5% GST, though the SDF itself remains tax-exempt.

The process is seamless. You pay the total SDF for your trip and the one-time $40 Visa Fee in advance. We (your tour operator) will handle the application for you. Once the funds are received by the Bhutan National Bank, your visa clearance is typically issued within 3–5 working days.

Yes. If you cancel your trip before arrival or decide to leave Bhutan earlier than planned, the SDF for the unused nights is 100% refundable. The Department of Immigration processes these refunds after you have exited the country.

Note: Bank transfer fees or credit card processing fees (approx. 3–5%) are non-refundable.

Bhutan is the world’s only carbon-negative country. Your fee funds:

  • Free Healthcare & Education: For all 700,000+ citizens.
  • Environmental Protection: Maintaining 70% forest cover.
  • Infrastructure: Upgrading trails, roads, and digital connectivity. By visiting, you aren’t just a tourist; you are a patron of a global model for sustainability.
